Im Jahr 1984 wird er im Bereich der Neueren deutschen Literaturgeschichte an der Albert Ludwig Universität Freiburg/ Breisgau habilitiert, und 1987 zum Professor für Neugermanistik an die Ruhr-Universität Bochum sowie 1993 an den Lehrstuhl für Ästhetik und Geschichte der Medien der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin berufen.
